The foot is one of the most complex parts of the body, consisting of 26 bones connected by numerous joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Because the foot is susceptible to numerous stresses, foot problems can cause pain, inflammation or injury resulting in limited movement and mobility.
Foot Pain
Foot pain is frequently caused by improper foot function. This can be aggravated by improperly fitted shoes. Shoes that fit properly and give good support can prevent irritation to the foot joints and skin.
Depending on the type of foot problem, the heels, toes, nerves, tendons, ligaments and joints of the foot can be affected.
Commonly diagnosed foot problems include:
- Adult-acquired flatfoot
- Gout
- Heel pain from plantar fasciitis and heel spurs
Foot Pain Treatment
Sometimes the symptoms of foot problems may resemble other medical conditions. Our providers offer diagnosis and treatment for many common foot and ankle problems.

- Diabetes foot care and limb salvage: Foot ulcers (sores) are common in people with diabetes. Left uncontrolled or untreated, they can lead to amputation. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of extremity amputation in the United States in cases that don't involve a traumatic injury.
- Extracorporeal pulse activation treatment (EPAT): Extracorporeal pulse activation treatment (EPAT) is a highly effective noninvasive treatment for acute or chronic muscle and tendon pain that stimulates blood circulation and accelerates the healing process. Damaged tissue gradually regenerates and eventually heals. Patients with heel pain (plantar fasciitis) or other tendon pain can benefit from this treatment. During the EPAT procedure, the doctor applies gel to the targeted area and moves the device over the area. The applicator delivers pressure waves into the painful area which gradually regenerates the damaged tissue.
- Foot care: Years of wear and tear can be hard on your feet, as can shoes that don't fit properly. Injuries and disorders of the feet can affect your mobility.
- Orthotics: Foot orthotics are custom-made inserts fitted into a shoe. They provide support for the foot by redistributing forces on the foot as it hits the ground, as well as realigning foot joints while standing, walking or running. Everyone from athletes to the elderly use orthotics to accommodate biomechanical deformities and a variety of soft tissue inflammatory conditions such as plantar fasciitis. They may also be used in conjunction with properly fitted orthopedic footwear in the prevention of foot ulcers in the at-risk diabetic foot.
- Senior foot care: Years of wear and tear can be hard on our feet. Disease, poor circulation, improperly trimmed toenails and wearing shoes that don't fit properly can also cause damage. Problems with our feet can be the first sign of more serious medical conditions, including arthritis, diabetes and nerve and circulatory disorders.
